This past weekend I took a trip to Las Vegas where one of my stops was the Imperial Palace Hotel to take in all the classic cars at The Auto Collections museum of cars.  It claims to be the World’s largest classic car museum and I would have to agree with them as its wall to wall vintage automobiles.  This time around it was probably my fifth time to see the collection and I was a little disapointed because the Ford Mustang family was only represented by one model, a 1969 Mustang Mach 1. … Continue Reading

According to an article over on AutoWeek, Shelby American is considering the return of its rent-a-racer program which offered upgraded Mustang GT’s to the public via Hertz rental car company.  The new program could launch as early as next year to coincide with Shelby American’s 50th Anniversary but nothing has been finalized.  If the program were to happen the 2012 Mustang GT’s would likely come in two traditional configurations: black and gold and white and gold with power coming from the 5.0-liter V8 engine which produces 412 horsepower. … Continue Reading

The other day when I posted news of the ‘Blue Angels’ edition Ford Mustang I left off a short promotional video released by EAA Air venture.  The promotional video includes a few photos of the ‘Blue Angels’ Mustang as it was being built.  In one of the photos you can see a chrome Mustang before it receives its blue finish which is similar to one done by Creations n’ Chrome out of Valencia, CA.  They are probably the same folks behind the paint scheme on this Mustang but we will have to wait for the complete details and photos to know for sure.  Check out the video after the jump… … Continue Reading

In a previous post we told you about a Ford Mustang themed TV show called ‘American Pony Builders’ that was shopping their idea around to the major networks.  Unfortunately for Jeff Yergovich, the brains behind the show all of the networks passed on the idea so he has turned to funding platform Kickstarter.com to help fund a 22-minute pilot episode to show TV producers and network executives what the Mustang themed show will be about. … Continue Reading

Aviation themed ‘Blue Angels’ Ford Mustang GT to be auctioned at EAA Air Venture

June 23, 2011 Mustang News No Comments

For the fourth straight year, Ford Motor Company has created a unique, “one of one” aviation-themed vehicle for auction to benefit the EAA Young Eagles program. The one-of-a-kind 2011 “Blue Angels” Mustang GT, which honors the Centennial of Naval Aviation, will go to the highest bidder at the Young Eagles Auction during AirVenture 2011 at the annual Gathering of Eagles event on Thursday, July 28.
The exterior of the “Blue Angels” Mustang GT, which was inspired by the acclaimed naval aviation demonstration team, features a unique blue chrome finish with a yellow gloss accent and “Blue Angels” scripted along with its iconic crest. The Blue Angels’ crest is also stitched into its leather Recaro seats. Under the skin, the “Blue Angels” Mustang is all performance with a super-charged 5.0L V8 engine producing more than 500-hp, Ford Racing handling pack, performance exhaust, and racetrack brake components.
“Ford is a long-time supporter of EAA and our mission to showcase the finest innovation and technology in flight,” said Tom Poberezny, EAA and AirVenture chairman. “The high interest among aviators in the U.S. Navy and the ‘Blue Angels’ Mustang team will make this a very sought-after item and ensure EAA’s ability to do some amazing things for our future aviation enthusiasts.”
The Ford “Blue Angels” Mustang will be on display inside the Ford Hangar during EAA AirVenture. This unique automobile continues Ford’s generous support for the EAA Young Eagles program, which exceeds $1.3 million in recent years.
The Young Eagles Auction is part of the EAA Gathering of Eagles on Thursday, July 28, at the EAA AirVenture Museum. The Gathering of Eagles annually draws more than 1,000 aviation enthusiasts in support of Young Eagles and other EAA programs that inspire young people to become the engineers, aviators, astronauts, scientists, and innovators – the aviation pioneers of tomorrow.
The “Blue Angels” edition joins the three other one-of-a-kind Mustangs created by the Ford Design and Engineering teams for the EAA Young Eagles Auction in recent years, each desired by both aviation and automotive enthusiasts alike.
In 2008, the Mustang AV8R, with cues from the F-22 “Raptor,” introduced the glass-roof canopy and delivered a record auction contribution of $500,000. In 2009, the AV-X10 “Dearborn Doll” auctioned was crafted in honor of World War II aircraft. In 2010, Carroll Shelby, a former U.S. Air Force flight instructor, and Jack Roush, a long-time P-51 pilot, collaborated for the first time to create the SR-71 “Blackbird” inspired by the legendary reconnaissance jet.
“The Ford Design and Engineering team members have really embraced the opportunity to build these one-off projects,” said Kevin Keling, Ford corporate events manager. “We develop the theme early and then marvel at the creativity and ingenuity of the team. This blue chrome paint is fantastic and unlike any thing you’ll see in production anywhere. The small details such as puddle lamps projecting jets are amazing!”

The world famous West Coast Customs team is building a Custom 2011 Ford Mustang GT 500 for the Darrell Gwynn Foundation to auction at Barrett-Jackson Orange County at the Orange County Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 25, Lot #336.6. The car was donated by foundation supporters Tom & Diane Day and delivered to the West Coast Customs team for trademark upgrades sure to astonish car collectors. The West Coast Customs will also give a custom built wheelchair a matching paint job to a custom built wheelchair that will be donated that week. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation’s mission is to provide AWARENESS, PREVENTION, SUPPORT, and ultimately a CURE for Paralysis.
“This is a project we are really excited about,” said Darrell Gwynn, president of the Darrell Gwynn Foundation. “I have to thank our supporters and friends Tom & Diane Day for making all aspects of the project come together for us. Being able to have West Coast Customs work on a car for us is huge. People are going to be amazed at what this team can do and we know the car is going to be special. The fact that the wheelchair we donate that week will match the car is really cool. Hopefully this car will auction well and allow us to purchase many wheelchairs that we can donate to individuals in need.”
The car will be unveiled at the Day Family Classic Cars Museum Grand Opening on June 22 at 7 p.m. at 2525 Wardlow Road, Corona, CA. That night the Darrell Gwynn Foundation will also give an individual his own set of custom wheels as 21 year-old Eduardo Reyes of Fullerton, Calif., who is diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, will receive a brand new custom built $20,000 wheelchair that will match the car designed by West Coast Customs. Reyes could not acquire a proper wheelchair through his healthcare provider and at age 21 is no longer eligible for California Children’s Services Benefits. The Darrell Gwynn Foundation stepped in to provide Eduardo with the medical equipment he needs to continue his schooling and vocational training and drastically improve the quality of his life.
The car build, car unveiling, wheelchair donation and auction at Barrett-Jackson Orange County will be filmed for an episode of TLC’s hit show “West Coast Customs”.
“We’re excited to be working with the Darrell Gwynn Foundation and help them with this project,” said Ryan Friedlinghaus, founder and CEO of West Coast Customs. “This car will have a lot of tricked out features and will be an ultimate tribute car mimicking the Coors Extra Gold car Darrell drove for many years during the height of his career.”
Taking design cues from Darrell’s winning 1990 Coors Extra Gold Dragster, the West Coast Customs team will transform this brand new 2011 Mustang GT into the ultimate tribute car.  Features on this car will include: custom hand-fabricated wide-body application, custom one-off color-matched Asanti three-piece wheels (21’x11’, 22’x8’), custom roll bar, one-off Doug Thorley headers and exhaust system, Ford Racing super charger, Baer brakes, custom hood and body kit, mixed gold and white pearl paint, Pedder’s adjustable coil-over suspension system, two-tone leather and suede interior and a custom West Cost Customs sound system.

Car collectors can witness the unveiling of the Custom 2011 Ford Mustang GT 500 at the Day Family Classic Cars Museum on June 22. Tickets can be purchased for a donation of $250 at www.darrellgwynnfoundation.org. Your donation is tax deductible and Barrett-Jackson Orange County will waive the bidder fee for all Day Family Museum Grand Opening attendees.
