Starting problems

My 91 mustang 5.0 has starting problems. The problem occurs only after the car is warmed up. When cold or first start of the day it cranks right up. After it is warm the engine will barely turn over. The car will push start without difficulty ( other than me pushing ) when this happens. I have replaced the starter, battery, both cables and I still have the same behavior. I am stumped and don't really like the idea of part swapping as a method of troubleshooting. This is probably a problem someone has seen before, I just do not know what it is.

Any ideas or comments would be appriciated.

Do you by chance have long tube headers. This is a common problem with heat off the headers getting the starter too hot.

No, I still have the stock exhaust manifold. I installed better mufflers several years ago. But thats all. Could it ever happen with stock exhaust after a lot of years of use?

Thanks for the idea,

When was the last time you changed the spark plugs, wires, cap and rotor?

It has been quite a while from a time perspective as the car has been parked for about the last 3 years. Mileage wise about 40,000 for the plugs, the rotor, cap, and wires have never been changed. The car has 104,000 total miles. I am curious as to how this would cause the problem.

Thanks,
