I am looking for a new Mustang and I have a few choices ,but I would like to know what you guys think would be a better car.
I would like a 2001 GT or a 96-98 Cobra with relatively low miles. Let me know your opinions on both.

I personally love cobra's so that's what I would choose. I do like the newer body style but I dont like the idea of ford using plastic intakes on the motor, sooner or later the split and leak like a you know what. You could always get a bullit intake or the FMS roots blower intake combo? I just like 96-97 Cobra's better. They are mean looking and modified already.

As of right now, I am partial to the 2002, 01 GT's (I own one of each :D ). However, I am a Mustang Lover True and Thru. Soooooo, go after what your heart desires and be happy you have a MUSTANG.....:D

I am going to have to say 96-98 Cobra all the way. I absolutely love mine and wouldn't take anything for it. But the '01 are cool too. I test drove a '00 before I bought my Cobra but it just didn't have the same pull while going through the gears even with the traction control off, so I went for the Cobra and been glad ever since.

Just find a good car. I do like my Cobra, if you were going to do stuff like supercharge it, a SOHC engine would be cheaper to either rebuild or to get a crate motor for. However, if you can find a Cobra that was adult driven, maintained well, and don't look like they are used up, and they don't ask for an arm and a leg because it's a Cobra, then you can't go wrong. I would tend to stay away from the '99 Cobra's IMO.

96-98 Cobras definately. I own a Bullitt and don't get me wrong, the GTs are fine but if you want the higher, more serious hp, the Cobra is the way to go.

If you're gonna get a recent one, at least an 01. The 99s are the first IRS cars and I've heard/read/seen them get crazy freakin wheelhop, etc.

Solid axles > Independent suspension @ straight line track.

Really though, how many of us actually do road courses?

:D

But either way, its a solid investment.

Im in this exact same position. I WANTED a NEW GT so I could have a virgin, untouched car and free financing. However, bs unexpected bills preclude me from doing that now. So...my choice was a used GT. Then, I thought about it and said, "Well, a 99 Cobra is a better car and will be new enough not to be wore out, but old enough to be affordable." Then I thought about the fact that the IRS would have to be upgraded to 03 specs and no matter what I get Ill be adding (among other things) an ARB Air Locker so things are going to have to come apart. So the benefit of the IRS is lost if I have to upgrade anyway. The only thing Id be getting is four valve heads and more power to start with till I upgrade and mod which would happen NO matter WHAT I get. So now Im going BACK to the used GT idea. I have a cheaper buy in, less financing and less miles but I give up the immediate power and the four valve heads. So far though, I think Ill be dollars ahead modding a GT to Cobra specs and beyond than modding an existing Cobra. The sucky thing is, Im slower with a GT until I finish the mods.

Btw, just about three weeks ago, a Caddy dealer had a 99 Cobra vert with less that 30k miles for under 20k$. Now if THAT had been around in a month when Im ready to buy Id have nailed it without ANY hesitation. That was a KICK BUTT deal.
