View Full Version : Idling problems on a 4.6L

Sometimes when I start the car, it won't idle. It's an automatic, so what I have to do is drive with the left foot on the brake, right on the gas. And then, out of nowhere, it will begin idling.
And then sometimes, it will idle low, like around 300, when the norm is 700 or 800...
Any ideas?
Any and all help would be great!
Thanks!
Michael

Im guessing by the user name the car is an 03 GT? Does the check engine light come on? Id go to the dealer and see if they can pull a code. Im not really sure what the problem would be.
Good luck,
Joey

You can also get your own code reader if it is throwing a check engine light. It's pretty easy to use. I'm afraid of the dealerships. They'll probably tell you there is water in the engine and your doohicky needs rotating.

I actually have a '96 model 4.6L....
That was what I was afraid of..
Now onto a tranny problem...When I downshift from 4th to 3rd, sometimes it will make a clank type noise, and then run really rough in 3rd...Going through the gears from a stop is usually okay. I know where to let off before going into 3rd, so I am babying it right now...
Any ideas? Linkage? 3rd gear stripped?

There is a fast and easy way to find the fault code. http://www.mustangworld.com/ourpics/fcar/dtcodes.htm Visit this website and follow the directions. Good luck.
