View Full Version : inexspensive ways to up my hp
I am looking for ways to increase my car's performance without spending an arm and a leg. I have heard that NOS is the best way, or maybe a set of pulleys. I am open for any kind of advice. Thanks.

Nitrous would give you the most bang for the buck. Probably the easiest kit to install is from a company called ZEX. Everything ( microprocessor, activation solenoids, & relays) in one easy to mount metal box. The box itself is only a little larger than your fist. Only a few wires have to be connected also. The great thing about this kit is that it is computer controlled so it keeps the nitrous to fuel ratio optimum at all times which help the motor live a long healthy life! I think the only setting for the kit is 75 hp though. MMFF tested it on a stock 97 GT and got 69.2 rwhp and 110.9 lbs.-ft. of torqe.

This wont increase HP but it will help in transferring power to the rear. GEARS!! Out of all i've done to date, the gears have impressed me the most. I opted for 4.10's and havent regretted to date. Now there is always a down fall, lack of traction. You will have to work the suspension sooner or later to increase traction. Nitrous is great, but I will only carry the bottle if I have intentions of using it. Gets to hot in West Texas to leave the bottle in the trunk. After searching for my Nitrous system, I chose the Edelbrock Dry system due to the safety features offered with this system. It will take a little longer to install, but will give you a piece of mind when in use.
Whatever you choose, I'm sure you will enjoy the increase in performance.

I saw some pictures a while back of a car that had a nitrous bottle in the trunk that exploded. The car was in the closed garage when it went off and wow did it explode. It was pretty cool to see though, especially when it wasn't your car.

I just checked the ZEX website and found out that they don't make a kit for 99 up 4.6 Stangs yet. Darn. There are other kits out there though, such as the Edelbrock dry system as jeffs01 already mentioned. Dry systems are the safest because they only introduce nitrous into the intake tract as opposed to nitrous and fuel which could lead to a pretty crazy nitrous backfire, that would probably cause the plastic intake to explode:eek:
I totally agree with the gears....go buy some right now!
As for pulleys you would most likely find around 10-15 rwhp with a good kit.
Best bangs for the buck:
Pullies
gears
CAI
exhaust (h/x pipe with mufflers)
Other stuff:
timing adjuster
shifter (5-6 speeds only)
Long tube headers
Bullitt Intake. :D
Even better stuff:
FR500 crate motor.

I'm not sure what hear Mustang your looking to up grade, but if it's a 99 and up, get a Diablo chip! Bang for the buck I think the chip, cold air intake and pullies are the best. The chip is around 235, and the cold air intake and pullies around 175. Though exhaust gives you increased HP, and can also give you the sound your looking for, it is also comes at a much higher cost.

Just read the article in the June issue of MM&FF on the upper intake box. Matched with a C&L MAF and 70mm Throttle body should weild some pretty good numbers for the 4.6, gonna have to look into this. :D

What do you have Chad and what have you done so far?
My car is 1999 GT. I haven't really done anything to my car. I bought the car used with 30k miles on it about two years ago. The only mods I know of that were done to the car, were done before I purchased it. The man who owned it before me only replaced the air filter with a K&N and he took the silencer off. I still have the silencer in my garage. I was told to keep it in case I ever wanted to modify my air intake. Thats about it.

Looks like Accufab wants into the Intake Plenum game now. They sure want a pretty penny though.

Then do 4.10 gear.
Steeda timing adjuster
Tri Ax shifter
Skip pullies. Yes they help but at the expense of alt charging and power assist during parking.
Anything else thats low cost doesnt gain anything.
I WOULD say lay out some cash and do longtubes, catless Dr Gas x and Borla XR 1 muffs.
how much does each mod cost? i will have to pay somebody to each one. i need to no what to save up.

4.10's can be purchased through www.gefracing.com for $140 and istallation can run up to $200. The Steeda parts can be purchased through http://www.unbridledponies.com/ and numerous other sites. Installing the shifter is very easy to do but you may want a mechanic to do the timing adjuster.
