I am in a very unfavorable situation for any car fan/ enthusiast. Let me explain. I have been saving up for a Mustang and currently have 3000 dollars. Good. Heres the problem. A 1979 Trans Am Bandit with a 403 in immaculate shape has surfaced in my community for about that much. See the problem? Should i hold out for a stang or go ahead and get the Trans Am and sell it later if i want to? I need advice!!!!!!!!!

I would probably wait & find a stang but if the T/A is as good of shape as you say it is then 3k does not sound like too bad of a price. Buy it & drive it a while then sell it or trade it for a stang later if you like.

Why are you EVEN considering a GM product? Screw the TA, get the Mustang.

Hey FalconGTHO, what is wrong with GM products, especially TAs? I am 18 and have owned a 94 Firebird Formula that was totaled after some lady in an Explorer wanted to find out if all the rumors about them being so easy to flip was true. Well she ran a turning light, ran over the front of my bird, and guess what the rumors were right, they do flip over pretty easy. My second car I still own, but is for sale, it is a 96 TA with a few mods done to it. Guess what another lady ran a light and hit me in that car also.....guess I just don't have very good luck! I also purchased a 91 GT after the second wreck and was going to sell the TA. The GT has too many mods to list, and oh yeah-a 10 point roll cage just in case any more women got the urge to run another light on me. Then I had to have knee surgery, so I coulndn't drive the GT because of the superstiff Centerforce clutch and ended up keeping the TA.The TA is again up for sale because I just bought a 96 GT. Any way After owning both Firebirds and Mustangs I should have to say I love them both and dislike neither GM nor Ford, except of course when GM took some pills that made them insane and discontinued the F-Bodies.
As for Ford Muscle you seem to have one tough decision. You didn't say what type of Mustang you were after. But 403 c.i. sounds pretty darn fun! Let us know when you make a decision.

What kind of mustang are you looking for? I personally do not like the late 70's T/A's and the one you stated is the T/A with the low HP oldsmobile motor, the cars were dogs :o
Get a mustang! :D
Get the Stang. Hands down. If you don't, you'll just regret it later.

Would have to agree with Falcon here. Some of us are die hard FORD fans, always have been and always will be and would never consider buying anything but a FORD. So with that said, GET THE MUSTANG!!!!!!

Well, while that applies to me, my reasoning goes beyond that. I grew up with schitheads who didnt know dick telling me how kick ass Chevy is. Fact is, it takes NO money and NO brains to build a Chevy. THATS why they are so popular. They are like freakin Legos. The ease of use made them popular. The popularity and the fact that they break makes parts plentiful and cheap. That adds to the popularity. Chevy and GM are just not built that well nor overall as good as Ford. As I mentioned in my opening post I have an auto tech degree and Im previously an ASE Master Recertified technician so I KNOW whats good and whats not, what breaks and what doesnt. THATS why I drive Fords. And so should you.

That is a little insulting. You make it sound like i am not a die hard ford fan. That is quite the opposite. I am a ford fan to the very extreme but i am in college and driving a four cylinder probe. I really really really want a mustang but i can't afford one right now. What is wrong with getting the trans am for a cruising car and when i graduate, ditch it for my dream, a 1969 mach 1??

Youre NOT as die hard as you say if you consider "sleeping with the enemy".
Find a suitable old, used Ford to drive. Screw GM.

Btw, the 70s TAs blew with the disco guido screaming hood chicken and low compression smog power. The 403 was a turd anyway and an Olds engine I believe.

do you think i haven't looked!!!! I look online on ebay and collectorcartraderonline and in the paper every day sometimes twice in one day. And i am hardcore ford. I don't care what you say. I know a lot about mustangs. more than most people. I have loved them since as long as i can remember. I just can't afford one right now.
And i thought the enemy was imports, not other classic muscle.

Lol. Calm down man. The "enemy" is ANYTHING that isnt a Ford. And a 79 Olds powered TA is HARDLY "classic muscle". Be patient young Grasshoppah. MUST you have a car right now? If not, just keep looking. Whats the dollar amount you have to spend? Screw EBay. Unless the vehicle is close where you can check it out like you would any other car, that is NOT the place to buy a car no matter WHAT shows up, HOW cool it is or how cheaply it can be had. Where are you anyway? Youre telling me you cant score a good shape, decent mileage 92 or 3 LX 302? THATS what you need to get.

I am in college right now and am really wanting a head turning cruiser until i get out. I only have about 3000. The trans am i am looking at is very nice. Nicer than the ordinary ones and is really a steal at the price. I might even buy it and resell it for a profit to get a stang. It is clean and sharp and will be a good car to drive until i graduate and get probably a 2005 :)!

It will take some time to find a decent stang. It took me a year to find a stang every other one besides mine was beat or had 100,000+ miles. Just have some patience and you can find one. Also being that the T/A is 24 yrs old stuff breaks a lot more often from age.
FalconGTHO
02-14-03, 03:12 AM
Fine. Do what you want. But Im telling you, its a BAD choice, REGARDLESS of who makes it. And I SERIOUSLY doubt youll turn a profit. You MAY break even. Youre in college, Im considerably older. TRUST my wisdom and judgement. Besides, do you REALLY want to look like a disco guido mullet head throwback? I dont think those "fly ass college chicks" will dig that too much.
Let's all try to remember that we are all on the same side here. Ford Muscle asked for our opinions and I think he got the general idea of the direction he should go. Now it's up to him to make the decision that best suits his needs and budget. We have offered him some direction and we don't have to live with the finality of the decision he makes. The last thing we at Mustang Heaven want is for anyone to get upset at the opinions of others and choose not to use the site anymore. But, they are opinions and we should leave them at just that. Let's continue to try and help our fellow Ford fans as best we can, and if they choose another path to follow, that is not for us judge for we tried to help as best we could. Ford Muscle will make the right decision. I can feel it...

Ford Muscle: Wasn't meant as an insult, just been there...Case in point - was in northern Maine, Ford/Dodge dealer pisses me off, drive across the street and buy a Chevy Pickup, drive back across the street and shove it in his face (he shouldnt have pushed a Dodge on me). Leave for Texas, find the first FORD dealer and get rid of the Chevy. Owning the chevy made me feel as if I was cheating on my Wife. That could have been the greatest truck in the world, but it wasnt a FORD and I wasnt happy.
I can understand the money aspect all to well. If you can buy it and turn it for a few a grand, more power to you. Could help you getting your Mustang a lot quicker.

For me, owning a Chevy would be like nothing.
