What is the definiton of the term modular? I am looking into buying a stang in the near future, and have been reading alot about them. In reading MM&FF i have ran across that term numerous times, just curious as to what it means.

In 96 all Mustangs got new motors. Gone were the popular pushrod V-8 engines and in were the new modular motors. Modular means that the engine has overhead camshafts(cams that are affixed the the top of the heads instead of 1 cam inside the engine block).GT models have single overhead cams, where-as Cobra's have a more "rev happy" double over head cam configuration.
Hope this helps.

Modular describes the construction and assembly technique. A common piston, rod and crank throw is used. Pairs of these are added or subtracted to achieve various displacements and configurations. Think legos. Its supposed to simplify product lines and streamline design changes, implementation and create the potential of a wider array of power choices across various lines.
