well im turning 17 soon, and i hope to purchase a 1973 mustang mach 1, and from what ive read the 351c doesnt push awhole lot of stock powerin 73 because of economy things and such(i think). what are the differences between the 1970 engine and the 1973 engine, what would be needed to bring up the power on the 73 cleveland block?

you can contact me at arthurrowe@mail.com

also i do not believe it is the 351cj

if this sounds retarded or hard to understand its because i dont know awhole lot about cars yet but i hope to soon :)

Well I can throw a few facts at you from what I know.

I don't know much about the 1970 Mach 1 ,but I do know a little about 71-73 Mach 1's. Here is what I got for you.

From 1971-1973 the Mach 1 came with a
250 cid Inline-6 was rated at 145 hp (71-73)
302 cid V-8 was rated at 210 horsepower (71-73)
351 cid V-8 was rated at 285 horsepower (71-73)
351 cid V-8 was rated at 330 horsepower (71-73)
351 cid V-8 Cobra Jet was rated at 370 horsepower (71-73)
351 cid V-8 Boss was rated at 330 ( 1971 Only )
429 cid V-8 Cobra Jet (1971 Only ) was rated at 375 hp

In 1971 they made 36,499 Mustang Mach 1's
In 1972 they made 27,675 Mustang Mach 1's
In 1973 they made 35,440 Mustang Mach 1's

Then came the gas crunch of the 70's and cars started going to higher gas milage rather then power.

In 1973 the horsepwer ratings are alot less then in 1970 and 1971. So if I was going to buy one I would get one from 1970-71.

only option is the 1973 mach1 going for 3,200 in the classifies said it was in great condition ill be having my neighbor(oldfriend) come with me to check it out then we take it to a mechanic to get it looked over and if its good im getting it.

so lets say i want to raise the power would i be able to get maybe heads exhaust and intake off an older 351C ? and put them on ? that are less restrictive, plus ill be hollowing the catalytic :)

sorry im not trying to sound like an idiot just comes natural :/

i just need to know the main differences between the two engines. what parts on the 73 351C are choking power.

I am not sure what made them so slow in 1973. I know that in 1973 the goverment put stiffer regulations of how much power they could produce. I know the engines suffer from low compression ratios which will keep HP numbers down. The 1973 Mach 1 weighed alot more then previous years which will keep track numbers down. Aside from that I am not sure what else keeps the power output down.

so maybe unneccesary weight added in some places on the car and probubly lower compression pistons or shitty cylinder head eh?

You may want to look into getting a whole different engine from say a 1970-1971 Mach 1 if you can find one. That might be pretty tough though or just rebuild the one in the car to whatever specs you want.

how much do you think it would cost to goto a junkyard and get a 351C from a 70 mach 1 and rebuild it.

I don't even have a good guess. I don't think too much. If somebody has an engine like that they probably don't have much use for it. I would start low when offering somebody money for it and see what you can get it for.
