View Full Version : ? on crack prone 4.6 intakes
I am not sure if this is the right section but, I was wondering if anyone has heard of a recall or anything about the 2V 4.6 intakes for being prone to cracks on the backside of the thermostat housing? I am guessing the problem is pre-'99 as mine is a '98 GT and they have since revised the intake b'cuz of that. (The earlier intakes were made of all plastic , the revised ones now have some aluminum in the areas prone to cracking.)
I am asking b'cuz I just had mine replaced for that reason(crack behind thermostat housing and even though it only cost me $50, I couldn't undertand paying anything for a repair that was an actual factory defect. I am lucky I still had a warranty on it.
Anyway, thanx for any info.

Ford had a silent recall on the intake for the 96 thru 98 because of that exact problem. I beleive I have read that you can get re-imbursed by providing Ford Customer Service with the repair invoice.

Ask shibby about the intake, We were driving down the highway and all of a sudden you see white smoke coming out from his car. He finally determined it was a crack in the intake.
I will let him explain more

Don't forget the anti-freeze all over our cars because some of us were following him!
Damn that sucks ! Thanx for the info. ok, now where's Shibby?LOL
I just want to see what others were told, I already had the intake replaced obviously, but wasn't sure about any recalls.
Thanx again.
Yes, there was a silent recall on the intake manifold on all 96-98 4.6 SOHC Mustangs. Most of them crack at the thermostat housing as did mine. I did not know about the recall at the time so I went to ford and got the intake and necessary gaskets and replaced it myself. Well one day a guy at a shop a couple of doors down from work asked me to come look at this 96 GT he had because he could smell antifreeze but could not find where it was coming from. I immediately pointed at the thermostat housing and that was the end of that. A couple of days later I asked him how the intake job went and he said he didn't even touch it. The customer took it to the dealership and they fixed it for free because of the silent recall. Needless to say I was pissed. Ford knew the reason I was there and did not even bother to tell me about the recall knowing that was what I was buying the parts for in the first place. So I took my parts receipt along with a "labor invoice" for $250 from my buddy at that shop to the same dealerships warranty department and raised hell. I had a check from Ford in the mail for full reimbursement in about a week. I have since gotten rid of that car but it's antifreeze is still on skooter's front bumper cover.
Thanx for the info Shibby ! I guess I should see about getting my $50 back ! LOL
I had even looked into getting the frpp intake for them to replace it with, but they wanted some where like $1600 for the intake plus another $400 about for the installation kit! I said screw it, another grand orso and I could just put a supercharger.
Anyway, thanx again for ur info! Sorry to hear about skooter's front bumper.
