Every once in a while when I got in the high RPM range my car would screech. I think it is the clutch for the pollution pump, but I'm not sure. Just recently, it has gotten a lot worse. Could it be anything else or has anyone experience this? I just changed the serpentine belt about a year ago and it already looks like I should get a new one. The recommended life is 50,000 miles, but I only drove 2,000 miles last year. What could be causing this wear?

I don't know that there is a cluch for the polution pump. I have always just yanked that thing out of there, but then again i don't have emissions testing here in michigan. Do you have them in ohio? I have heard of the belt tensioner going bad and needing to be replaced. you may want to look at at that.
Your smog pump just has a pulley on the front of it. If that goes out it will just flat out lock up and throw the belt (just ask Skooter). I would replace the serpentine belt, belt tensioner, and idler pulley. The bearings in the belt tensioner pulley and idler pulley just wear out after awhile as does the spring in the belt tensioner. Probable causes of your squealing. Also good preventative maintenance and easy to change.

when I said clutch, I was talking about the pulley. That's just what I call it for some reason. Anyway, thanks for your help. I'll let you know if it resolves the problem.

No problem. Some people call different parts different names and then others just plain don't know. As long as I've been in the parts business I get it all the time. I try and help out the ones that don't know instead of making fun of them or being a **** about it like some other sites do. That way, that person can then turn around and maybe educate someone else one day. Let me know how your car turns out.

Well actually, right now I'm not in toledo. I go to UT, but right now I am on a co-op for tenneco automotive, so I'm living just west of cleveland right now. Where are you?
