I'm looking at a 1984 GT Covertible that is for sale near me, but the small, back window on the left side has a problem. It does not fit flush with the drivers window and the top, which would allow water to get in. There is about a half an inch gap between it and the drivers door window. These small windows were originally power operated, and i'm wondering if anyone has an easy way to remedy this? Is it the motor, the connections, what? I would rather just not put these small windows down at all, just leave them up all the time, whether the top is up or down, but I need to get this window flush somehow, and keep it that way. It looks like I can pull the panel on the inside out and that would grant me access to the motor. Has anybody had this trouble, or can anyone tell me what to do to help? This would be my first car, I'm 16, and mechanically inclined, I'm hoping it is something I could fix over a weekend as a project, or take it into my autotech class and fix it. The attached picture is of the window I am talking about, although the drivers side window is not up, but its the leading edge that is not flush, the whole window is slanted back at an angle just enough to not be flush

Thanks
Will

If the motor works fine then it is probably something you can just adjust inside the back panel to make it align up properly. I know this is a common problem with those type windows. Even if you have to replace something it won't cost very much. If that is keeping you from buying it I wouldn't let it stop you because that can always be fixed.

If the other side lines up perfect just take both sides off and compare to see what the problem is.

The window doesn't move when you flip the switch. Could it be just an electrical connection? Or is it most likely the motor?

How much would a new window motor cost, and where would I get one?

Thanks

Where is Shibby when you need him?

I would guess it is probably the motor since it does not even move at all. I am not sure of a price ,but you could look on ebay for some ideas.

Pull the panel so you can access the motor and window track. Make sure the pigtail is clean and properly attached to the motor. If it is, and the window still won't go up or down, disconnect the pigtail from the motor and see if you are getting power at the end of the pigtail when you hit the window switch. Get a multimeter or a simple test light (circuit tester) and with the vehicle on hit the window switch while touching your red lead or the test light to the metal contact inside the pigtail. If you are getting power at the pigtail then your motor is out. Napa Auto Parts sells all of the window motors for your car The part number for the driver's side rear motor is #49-37. It will run you about $75 with the exchange of your old one. You will be able to fix this in one day so don't let something this minor hold you back from buying the car. Once you get your old motor out, you will be able to manually adjust the window back into it's proper place and then put the new motor in. When you buy the motor, I strongly suggest you purchase a Haynes manual for the car as well. This type of repair will be covered along with several others in the manual. For $15 bucks, it's a great investment.
Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks guys!

I think i'm gonna go ahead and buy the car. It's in gorgeous shape, and its only got 90k miles on it. I'll get it home and pop the panel and see what's going on with the window mechanism and check the electrics. I'm going to try and see if the guy will lower the price because of the window prob.

Thanks!
