View Full Version : How hard is it really adjust to a manual tranny, first time driving.
 I am plannin to purchase an '05 GT. Although I truly don't know whether to pick a manual or an automatic transmission. PLEASE HELP! I know that if I buy this car I will have it for at least 5 years, and I am wondering whether it won't be a hastle to switch gears all the time. Please help! Thanks.:)

Shifting gears hasn't gotten old for me yet and all 3 of my mustangs have been sticks and my car now is also a stick. It is only a pain when you are in stop and go traffic with a heavy clutch. I would absolutely get a manual tranny, it is the only way to drive a mustang

Better acceleration and power out of a manual. I might be biased though since every car I've owned has been a manual. Rush hour in San Diego isn't that bad with it. I like to be able to pop the clutch and roast them through first and second like I did last night. I have an '05 GT by the way.
Thanks guys. I know that you get more power and all and all the quicker acceleration, and less fuel waste with a standart. It's just that im mostly thinking, would i get tired of it. Im only 17:D , Im not totally toward like blasting off from the lights or anything. I just want a mustang and not get tired of switching gears all the time. But thanks!
well if you are a driving freak [like me[:D you should go with the manual especially with the powerfull lovely beast [05 gt] . but if you are not into driving, and you just wanna look cool in a mustang , then go with the auto....:( DAMN .....KID: YOU SHOULD GO FOR MANUAL
Sure. Im GOINT FOR IT. Lol, umm yea i made the decision:D :D :D

There is nothing like shifting gears. It may get old if you drive in traffic alot.

Since I have the Auto 5 GT, I looked at my original choices of getting the Auto or the Manual.
I had to take into consideration, that there might be a point where my mother might have to drive the Mustang.
Though she can utilize a manual, she would have to put up with shifting and handling the power in the first place.
Since I do a lot of city driving, I debated the merits of the Manual vs. Auto.
True the manual would give one an edge in fuel mileage but only slightly. If one is not so crazy to horse the car around all the time you can expect rather surprising mileage from the V-8 Auto.
Into my third tank full, I am seeing about 19.5 in the city. I hope to take a trip soon with the GT and see how she does on the highway.
Purists will go and get the Manual, while the more sedate type's will prefer the Auto, that still has plenty of oompha to leave behind a Dodge Hemi from a standing start:)
Consider others who may drive the car. Can they even shift gears in the first place without leaving a collection of parts streaming from behind the car or embarressingly spining the tires at the wrong moment. (Nothing worse than smoking the police cruiser behind you.)
Since you will be the primary it will be your choice in the end.
Good luck. May your choice be a happy one.

Hi,
Looking at other forums I seen a post by Dustin from Whipple Industries, they make a supercharger for Mustangs. He mentions that the auto in the GT is pretty bad, week. Says input shaft and other parts are not strong. They will make a charger for the auto latter but have to use more torque management to keep it from blowing up. Not his exact words but close.
I went to the Whipple web page and he is on the home page and looks like a engineer for them so i guess he knows what he's talking about.
I'm in the process of deciding between auto and manual, and this may help make up my mind.
Anyone have thoughts/feedback on this?

Choosing the tranny goes with how do you intend to use the car. Is it going to be a daily driver? Or is it going to be a competion car where you will be hammering the tranny and putting stress on it during high speed runs.
Most will keep the car in its mild form, maybe adding a K&N filter to replace the OEM and nothing much else while others will go hog wild and modify the car into a fire breathing monster.
I can be counted among the ones that will keep the car in its mild form, happy with what I have.
Ford engineered the tranny to take so much power before things started falling off. The aftermarket will bear the brunt of the mods being made available to the 05's and it will be the person with the deep pockets who will decide if the manual or auto is suitable to their tastes.
Deciding on auto or manual is going to be a toss up. The mild mannered folks will likely choose the auto while the no so mild mannered folks go manual.
Either way the car still has plenty of oompah.
