The check engine light came on a couple of days ago on our 2002 Explorer. Is this something I can hook my code scanner up to? And if so, there is the hook up located? I never received the manual for the Explorer. Are they usually located around the firewall?

You should be able to hook your scanner up to it without a problem, well, depending on your acanner. As for the placement of the plug i would checkaround the drivers side strut tower and firewall in the same area(same place as the mustangs. Where is SNW BLUE BY YOU when we need him. he will be around in a bit hopefully to tell you right where it is.
The scanner you have is for 95 and older Fords so it won't work on the Explorer. The service port should be under the dash behind the console kind of where your right knee/calf would be. Casey has a Diablo Predator for his truck. We should be able to pull the code with that.

Your Explorer is OBD 2 compliant and requires a scanner that can read OBD 2 codes. You can buy these scanners @ pep-boys or at most auto parts stores. All vehicles whether they are US or Jap have to meet OBD 2 standerds since 1996 all the plugs are the same and they are all located on the drivers side under the dash somewhere. If they have a different location they have to have a lable under the dash telling you where the data link connector is. ( It is a federal law ) I also think you can buy a really cheap scanner @ Harbor Freight, this thing should be able to give you the codes, Then your next obstacle will be deciphering the code!!! If you can get the code out of your vehicle e-mail me and I will try to get the code definition for you. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

Forgot to post what the problem was....
We took the Exploder into the Ford house to get it checked out. We got it back the next day fixed with no charge. Turns out is was a recall item that they just found out about. They also fixed one of the other recall items of the rear glass door lift shocks. Nothin better than leaving the Ford house for free!!! Happy customer!!!!:D
