I noticed a while back that if I hit the brakes and come to a stop harder than normal that the e-brake light would come on. Just as if you pulled up the e-brake itself. Is this normal. I have more to this story, but I don't want to confuse it now.

any ideas??

Not only is that light for the ebrake it is also to tell you something is wrong with your breaks. Have you checked your fluid? You might be low or there could be something wrond in the brake system itself. Knowing the rest of the story could help

I though it only came on to let you know the ebrake was up.

Here's some more then...

Somethimes when I am switching gears, it will also come on. Comes on a little more frequently now. I'll check the fluids and pads. (Is that what that grinding is???:D )

WARNING: Driving a car off a cliff can be hazardous to your health:D

I don't think pads will set it off unless, maybe, you are really really low and it is causing the fluid to drop just enough.

check the fluid and pull the front wheels off and make sure the abs sensors are clean and dust free.

I would have to agree with everybody else, your brake master cylinder is probably low on brake fluid and this is why the red brake light is comming on. I would have to say that either you have a caliper or wheel cilnder that is leaking brake fluid or you need brake pads or shoes in the rear if you have drums, or your master cilinder is leaking brake fluid or you have a dammaged brake hose or line. You see it's real easy just put that thing in the air through some jack stands under it and pull off the wheels and start looking around. I am sure the problem is not that hard to find!!! Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, my mom has a 2002 Dodge Stratus R/T and her car was doing the same thing it started off by doing it very seldom, then it progressivly would increase each time i pushed in the clutch to shift. Key word there is clutch. Check your clutch master cylinder and make sure its full. As soon as i did that it went away.

His car doesn't have a clutch master or slave cylinder. It's cable operated.

Typically I've noticed anytime I break hard (and I do mean HARD) my E-brake light will come on. It's a natural characteristic of the car. Don't worry about it.

Skooter, CHECK YOUR BRAKE FLUID!
The red brake lamp is an indicator for the PARKING BRAKE! and is
also an indicator of a mechanical brake issue
2 things here. Notice I said parking brake and not emergency brake, no where at any time , by any vehicle manufacturer has this ever been called an emergency brake, it is a parking brake.
If the fluid level is low, the float in the master sinks and completes the circuit in the switch on the master. If the fluid is not low, usually indicating good brakes, then test the switch, they do go bad.
If the fluid is low, find out why.
