As has been noted before, 2005 Mustang GT's are in very short supply. I am currently in College and I will need to get a car when I graduate May 1st.

Currently, GTs are selling for well over MSRP. I would like to avoid paying that much at all costs, but at the same time, I need to have a car May 1st for my new job.

I've heard some talk of GT production going up in April/May. Does anyone know just how much production is expected to go up? I'm trying to get a feel for how fast prices are going to drop, and how much they are going to drop.

I don't want to pay 400 over MSRP ordering a car in March, if in April I could have gotten the same car for 300 over invoice.

Also, I have very specific things I want in my GT, so I'm interested in order time.

How long did it take you guys from the time you ordered the vehicle until you got it?

4 to 6 weeks and no you do not have to pay above MSRP... check other ford dealers, go out of state if you have to. not all dealer are the same.......

I agree with nmto, never pay more then msrp, I just drove by a Ford dealership today and saw two GT's on the lot. Mustangs are out there ,but you may have to look for them. Try Ebay and look for New 2005 Mustangs.

Ford is dribbling the GT's out. Because sales tactics vary from region to region, one dealer may sell at invoice, while another dealer knowing that they have a hot commodity will charge as much as they can for the vehicle.

I detest such tactics and do recommend if you have a dealer trying to sell you a GT with a substancial markup over invoice that you take your business elsewhere.

The main thing about the lack of GT's on the lots is that Ford is ramping the production for the introduction of the convertible GT. The 4.6 Liter engine used in the GT is in short supply. Unlike the iron block version on which it is based the 2 valve per cylinder which is used in the F150, some Explorers and the Expedition the aluminum block 3 valve motor is used only in the GT and the souped up varients of the GT.

You can find the GT's if you hunt carefully enough and of course you can find the Saleen's as well. A local dealer near me had three on his lot in one week with serial numbers from the 140's to the 170's.

One good tool to use is the WWW.FORD.COM website and search local inventories. When you see the little photo of the front end of the GT, then you know that dealer likely has one on his lot or it is on its way to them.

A side note to the GT.

If you do purchase a unit, be sure to get a couple of quarts of makeup oil. 5W20 weight. Since I purchased mine it has used a 1/2 quart of oil in the first 500 miles. Gas stations I have checked do not carry 5W20. Do NOT put heavier grade of oil in motor. You will likely regret it.

Coolent. The green stuff will not work in the engine and will damage the cooling system so do not use any old style green coolent for makeup. Get a jug for about $11.00 from the dealer. Most service stations I have checked do not carry the new type of coolent.

Why the makeup? Simple. You will have air bubbles in the system and over a period of time it will finally clear them up. Keep the fluids topped.

Automatic transmission. Don't have to check. It is done by the dealer.

Good luck on locating your GT. You will enjoy it if you purchase it.

How much over invoice would be reasonable for a GT if I bought it today? Typically I like to pay no more than 200,300 dollars over invoice. Is that a reasonable expectation for this car?

The GT varient is hot. So expect to pay a premium of 2-5K in some cases.

Or wait when they switch over to the 06's and get an 05 then.

You can of course get a 05 V-6 pretty easy. Most dealers have those coming out of their ears.

You are confusing me a little bit. First you said, "I detest such tactics and do recommend if you have a dealer trying to sell you a GT with a substancial markup over invoice that you take your business elsewhere. "

However, a 2k-5k markup over invoice will put the price well over MSRP.

A dealer will make a profit either way. I do detest it still but a 2-5K markup can be expected overall. A dealer will find a way to do it, no matter what.

Also the MSRP is only a recommendation from Ford itself. Be happy you do not want the Ford GT. It is supposed to go for a cool $150,000. Some have been fetching $200-250,000.

I got mine in oct . it was the second one in the state. It was at a show and was marked up 3k over MSRP in denver they are all 3-5 k above. However since I was "really" interested. I got mine for less.
asking was 33K MSRP was 29,120 I paid 28k.
for ref You MPG may vary :-)

Markups like that aren't right. If you go to a dealer that does that chances are they aren't a very reputable place and don't seem interested in doing business with the same customers in the future. The dealer I went to wants to have good relationships with its customers. Since it's such a hot car and in such high demand that they are selling them for sticker price and nothing over that. Which is reasonable. I got one for 500 bucks under it. Paid about 28k, but that's cuz i got leather seats, SAB, and UIP.

Alot of you guys are not posting were you are from, so this info may not interest you.
The dealer I work for: Morande Ford, Berlin CT - 860-828-3546
3 GTs, pay the sticker, maybe less, drive it home
Dealer I used to work for: Lombard Ford,Winsted CT - 800-822-4222-EXT120. 4 GTs, pay sticker, maybe less, drive it home.
This is also an SVT dealer.
Never pay more than sticker!
Cases in point: People paid 90 to 100,000 for 00 R models, easily had today w/ less than 5,000 miles for mid 30s, or 03 Cobras that poeple paid 3 to 10,000 over for, only to hear dealers were selling for sticker or less.
Lombard sold a leftover 03 yellow rag for 32,000.00. 4 miles on the clock. Hows that for mud in your eye.
Best of luck to all!
