Background & Details

The 2009 Mustang was sired by the same father as the 2005 Mustang and while it was a successful generation in terms of performance and quality models, it was clearly the end of an era and Ford knew it. 2010 Mustangs will make their entrance somewhere about mid-year 2009 so Ford phoned it in for the 2009 model year.

The 2009 Mustangs come in several versions and they weren’t all boring. The V6, the V6 premium, the GT, the GT premium, the California special, or how about a Shelby GT500 Coupe, GT500 convertible or a GT500KR to get your heart pounding at about 150 mph.

The Mustang did offer one new cool option and that was a new factory-installed glass roof option that gave passengers a panoramic overhead view and more interior lighting. The glass roof was fixed and made out of safety glass that was tinted to protect the passengers and interior from harmful ultra violet radiation. The glass was also coated with an acoustic vinyl layer that reduced noise, vibration and harshness. If the sun got too intense a manually operated, retractable sunshade was included to shield the driver and passengers from the intensity of the sun. This panoramic roof available as a $1,995 option on both V6 and V8 powered GT cars. The idea was that this option gives you some of the benefits of a drop top, yet it’s cost makes it possible to have that extra sunshine at a price that’s half way between the cost of a coupe and a convertible.

The warriors in pink car continued into 2009, with its exclusive pink color and interior accents. The Bullitt which was a tribute to the mean green Mustang machine from the iconic 1968 Steve McQueen movie where he played detective Bullitt was still offered as an option on the GT. Also continuing was the exceedingly powerful Mustang Shelby GT500KR King of the road special as well as the “regular” Shelby GT500 cars being offered too.

Interior changes were minimal for the 2009 Mustang. The Bullitt got a revised interior instrument cluster with new gun sight graphics and GT500 style seats. Engine and powertrain options were untouched for 2009 model year. The base 4.0 liter V6 engine continued with 210 horse power while the GT got the 4.6 liter modular V8 engine with 300 horsepower, which was basically unchanged since 2007. Transmission options include a 5 speed automatic and a Tremec 5 speed manual. The Ford Racing group provided parts to bump up the 4.6 liter V8 in the Bullitt to 319 horsepower. The supercharged 5.4 liter ( 329 cubic inch ) engine in the 09 GT500KR remains at a huge 540 hp keeping its performance levels at the levels of supercars costing several times the admission price of this domestic hot rod.

Special Edition Models & Variants

The GT/CS, Pony Package and Warriors in Pink all continued on in 2009 with only minor detail changes.

2009 Ford Mustang GT

GT

The GT continued to be available in 2009 with only minor detail changes. The Mustang GT was still the model for enthusiasts, with a bang for your buck formula that made it attainable and a strong performer at the same time. Despite the aged solid-axle layout, the suspension does well in soaking up imperfections while keeping the tires in contact with the pavement. The Mustang GT is an easy car to drive quickly on the track because it responds to the helm and throttle with equal aplomb. The car possesses very good balance.

Shelby GT500

The 2008 Shelby GT500 was one awesome car so when Ford basically carried it over unchanged for the 2009 model year we weren’t super disappointed. Equipped with a 5.4L (330 cid) supercharged intercooled DOHC V8 engine that produces 500hp at 6000 RPM and 480 lb-ft torque at 4500 RPM, the 2009 GT500 is one fast car. Using a dual 60mm electronic throttle body and a supercharger operating at 9 psi of boost Shelby and SVT created a legend that is still popular with gear heads all these years later.

2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR

Shelby GT500KR

Exactly the same as 2008 model year Shelby GT500KR, the 2009 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500KR was Ford’s 40th Anniversary limited production upgrade to the Shelby GT500. While 1000 units were produced in 2008, demand for the top dog Mustang was so strong that Ford approved it for one more year of production. In all, an extra 712 cars were made for 2009. They were identical to the 2008 models in every way.

2009 Ford Mustang GT/CS California Special

GT/CS California Special

The GT/CS, or “California Special,” returned as an option package for the 2009 Mustang GT in Premium trim, for a third consecutive year. As with the 2008 package, no discernable changes were made on the mechanical side of things. A new color, Vapor Silver Clearcoat Metallic, became available for 2009, replacing Grabber Orange Clearcoat in the lineup. The only other change was that the floor mats now featured a chrome “MUSTANG” logo rather than the California Special nomenclature.
